In Auto, a depth model estimates how far away everything is and the eye focuses on the spot you tap. Distance applies when a fixed distance is chosen. The camera stays on the main lens so the picture doesn't jump to the ultra-wide. If distances look wrong, tap Calibrate distance, put the ring on something you know the distance to, and pick it.
